All Things Homemade
Whenever a holiday or birthday come around, my mind goes straight to “what can I make for this”? Unfortunately I usually have far more ideas than time for, but it just excites me for some reason to make things homemade.
For example a birthday for my friend or mom comes around, and I immediately want to make them some of my favorite homemade lotion.
Or it’s summer time and someone is hosting a BBQ at their house, and I have extra cow’s cream. So I think, why don’t I make them some butter?
I shared some of my favorite homemade gift ideas in this ebook, so make sure you grab that if you’re a “I’ll make it myself” kind of person like me!

My Sweet Tooth
I am the kind of person who likes things like chocolate, hot cocoa, brownies, or chocolate chip cookies. That’ll do it for me. Anything with that kind of melt-in-your-mouth chocolate is my favorite.
I’m not real into fruity flavors (although I love eating real fruit by itself) and I haven’t eaten “brand” candy since I was a kid. But even then, we never had it in our house. So when I think of Skittles, I think of the one time we were at the movie theatre and I got them. Or maybe after trick or treating one Halloween.
I have done my research, and when I see “Red-40” or “yellow-5”, I stay away. Those are artificial coloring agents that I don’t want in my body.
So anyway, chocolate is one of those things that you can’t mess up. And it’s vegetables, which makes it healthy for you right? Just kidding.. sugar is still sugar but chocolate is on the nice list for me.
TOOLS NEEDED
Fork or wisk
INGREDIENTS (Salted Orange Chocolate Hearts)
1 cup cocoa powder
Half cup maple syrup (you could also use honey)
1/2 cup solid coconut oil
3 drops wild orange essential oil (optional. Always make sure your essential oil is safe for internal use. I know and trust doTERRA oils, but I wouldn’t trust a generic brand from the store. Read more about how we use oils at the homestead here)
Few pinches of course pink salt (optional)
PROCESS
In a small stovetop pot over medium heat, add the coconut oil, cocoa powder, and maple syrup.
Use a fork or whisk to stir, until all ingredients are melted together.
Once your mix is a thick liquid-y chocolate texture, remove it from the stove and add the essential oil. Stir to combine.
Sprinkle a pinch of salt into the chocolate mold so that when the chocolate is flipped over the salt will be on top.
Spoonful the chocolate mixture into the mold, leveling it out as you go.
Place the chocolate mold in the fridge for 1 hour or until hard. Pop the chocolate out of the mold and enjoy!
