We refreshed our living room space (and spent almost no money doing it!) to welcome a new season and to freshen up the space. It’s funny, how sometimes living in one spot for a long time can start to look the same. And just doing the smallest adjustments like moving furniture or repainting something can make a huge difference. Come see our farmhouse living room and how we refreshed it for spring.

Watch: Spring Farmhouse Living Room Refresh
Happy to Stay at Home
With the world in a shut down, I figured it was a good time to make sure our homestead was looking its best. After all we are spending all day every day here, right?
I am so excited to share our farmhouse living room. Spring is upon us and doing a refresh of any room just feels good.
New colors, new plants, or maybe even new paint. These are all things we really enjoy doing and they don’t cost much but give you a huge feeling of change. Why buy a new table when you can just paint it?
Spring Farmhouse Living Room Refresh
Our living room is pretty simple. With two couches, a coffee table, and two side tables, the room is a nice fitting square with only a few pieces.
But when I was thinking about how I could give this room a refresh, it took me a little bit until it finally occurred to me what to do.
The shutters.
We have these beautiful shutters in front of our large farmhouse window leading into the backyard. Previously, we had a two person couch in front of this window.
Because we have a morning routine (see more on that below) where we open up the shutters when we first come downstairs, I thought, why do we have this huge couch blocking the view?
So I moved that thing over to the other side of the wall, which now fits perfectly beneath three old wall photos.
These photos looked really weird on the wall by themselves, so it was almost meant to be that they had a couch under them.
The Best Hand-Me-Downs
Almost all of the furniture here are actually me downs. Do you have hand me downs?
The couches, coffee table, and one side table are all hand me downs from my parents. In fact, they got these couches right after they got married. Then John and I got them right after WE got married.
I love that they’re hand me downs. I love that they have more meaning than something we picked up at Ikea or Target. And I love that they are the perfect style for this room. We love wood and shades of white in our home, and they just match perfectly.
My dad filmed every second of our childhood. We used to watch the home videos growing up, and I remember seeing us playing on this couch. Of course, it’s been reupholstered since then, but it’s still the same cushions and structure as it always has been. That’s pretty special.
One Touch of Modern
The other side table is our newest piece in this room. Although, I picked it up for free as an antique, so maybe it’s actually the oldest. But I’m saying it’s new because I refinished it and gave it new life.
Everything in this room is simple, organized, yet not perfect. For example, the shade of white on the side table is different from the couches, which is different from the walls, and the sheepskin rug, and the siding.
If everything in your house matched, then you brought in one item that was slightly off, it would probably attract attention and start to bother you.
However my strategy is to collect items that are CLOSE in color. I love various shades of white, cream, off white, linen, cotton. And then there’s wood – new, old, refinished, not finished, raw, scratched, etc. It all flows together if you let it.
Spring Farmhouse Living Room Fireplace
You’ve got to have a cozy fireplace, right?
We use our fireplace for heat more than anything, but even in the summertime I long to turn it on because it’s just so pretty to see the fire burning.
In this little corner nook we have our hand me down wood side table, a jute basket that we keep blankets in, and a faux sheepskin rug. I love when our kitty Summer is all curled up on this rug in front of the fire.
We have a dog here sometimes too. My parents come over on the weekends and bring their dog who likes to chew on bones on this rug. Which would normally be a problem but since this rug is machine washable, getting stains out is super easy.
We don’t have much in this house that is “untouchable” – we use everything to its fullest and it if gets stained, it gets stained.
Speaking of stained – do you know if you mix water, vinegar, and baking soda together you have a natural carpet stain remover? We’ve used this for wine, mud, food, and even dog urine. It works super well.
Morning Routine
Mornings are my favorite time. The calm of sunrise, the sound of the tea kettle firing, and the first sip of coffee. I’m more relaxed just typing this!
We also really love diffusing essential oils in the morning. We do a mix of citrus orange and cypress in the morning to slowly wake up and get focused for the day. They also just have a nice clean smell, like you’re refreshing the air before the start of a new day.
Do essential oils really work?
Yes! Essential oils have been around for hundreds of years and have been used in many ways such as aromatically (diffusing in the air), topically (interacting with the skin) and internally.
Using essential oils is an easy way to get highly dense chemical constituents from things like flowers, herbs, plants, and other organic compounds.
Highly concentrated oil from these organic plants can help support overall health, digestion, immune support, skin support, emotional well-being, and more.
Our world has evolved so much that many of us are reliant on processed, non-organic chemically-produced products that can be harmful to our health. Of course, I am super thankful for modern day medicine when we get a broken bone or a serious disease. But in our house, we use essential oils in a preventative way in hopes of decreasing our chances of having to see a doctor in the first place.

Spring Farmhouse Living Room Coffee Table
Back to the morning routine – did I mention coffee?
My husband and I sit down on this couch every morning and drink our coffee. We make our coffee in a french press.
It’s so funny. Our coffee maker that we loved actually broke about a month ago and we were devastated. But we did have a backup french press for camping purposes, so we pulled that out. And ever since we started using that, along with freshly ground coffee beans, we cannot go back. French press is way. too. good!
Question – coffee table – natural wood or paint it white?
We have been seriously considering painting this coffee table our favorite farmhouse white. But here’s the thing. I grew up climbing all around this table! The raw, stained wood tells a story, and I kind of don’t want to cover it.
What do you think?
And then there was color!
We have a large blue and white area rug in this area that I believe is from WayFair. I was super hesitant to go for a colored rug, because remember I just told you how much I love shades of whites or wood ONLY?!
But this was an exception.
The thing is, we really use this space. Coffee spills here, wine spills here, and I just didn’t want something I couldn’t clean and would regret buying. This blue actually compliments the room instead of distracts from it, so I’d say it was a good buy!
Evenings at the Farmhouse
During the day, this space is used as a work office, and at-home exercise studio, and many other things.
But one thing remains the same.
Every night it gets cleaned! And I don’t even mean a real cleaning. I just mean that I take away all the laptops, mouse, phones, notebooks, workout equipment, etc. Because it’s evening and time to relax.
So I get my lavender essential oil going in my diffuser, crank on some mellow tunes, and maybe if we’re lucky John opens wine. That’s the routine here folks, and it never gets old.
